260z Gearbox

A Zcar friend of mine has been rebuilding a few gearbox’s lately. So he said to me if you would like to rebuild your box now would be the perfect time. Not one for missing opportunities I decided it would be a great way to learn more about gearbox’s, something I’d never really taken the time to study.

So I pulled out one of the greasy box’s I had tucked away in the garage and slotted it into my mum’s tarago (the perfect Zcar parts hauler) and ran over to his place. Once there I unbolted the bell housing from the rest of the box and removed the rear cover. Upon inspection it was just as I thought stuffed syncro’s. I don’t have any pictures at the moment but you can tell when a syncro is stuffed by looking at the surface if it’s all shiny it’s worn out. You can sometimes get away with switching them around but it looks as if it was already done once with this box.

The early Zcar boxes found in the 69-71 series I 240z’s has a Warner Syncro style box. These are generally considered a better design and why Nissan went from that design to a solid style syncro I’m not sure. Perhaps it was cost cutting? Anyway the good thing is the later 280zx boxes did have the warner style syncro’s again.

It looks at this stage that I’ll place later syncro’s in the early 260z 2 seater 5 speed box. The one with the good first and second gear ratio’s for nice acceleration. I’m not saying other box’s are no good some have very good ratio sets so you be the judge. Anyway I haven’t finished building the box and not sure what I’ll do yet, I really should be saving some money for my overseas trip.

I’m also hoping to get my bonnet painted and a dent massaged out of my front left fender (long story) but it’s not too bad. We have the Nissan / Datsun Nationals coming up on Easter Weekend in April so want the old girl looking as respectable as possible.
