Ever since I got my 240z I knew the interior needed work. It wasn’t really too bad but if your anything like I am then well you kinda want it perfect
. I guess it’s all the little things that bother me, but all the little bits and pieces add up.
For some my interior probably looks fairly original, to some it’s close enough. For me it’s about presenting the car in a clean manner, and probably something very close to what it would have looked like off the show room floor. The previous owner(s) decided to change the interior a bit by replacing the some of the vinyl parts in the doors with cloth or a felt like material. Probably looked alright at the time and certainly better than some of the funky attempts I’ve seen over the years. Believe me I’ve seen some masterpieces, sometimes it reminds you of what you would expect a 70’s pimps apartment to resemble, but let’s not go there.
The seats were also half replaced with a felt like material, over time the sun has faded the once lusterous black seats and turned them half gray. After 30 odd years seating the seats were feeling a little flat and generally unhappy. What to do? Well I did want to recover the originals including new material and padding but at a cost of probably $800AUD I found some Recaro seats that were alot more supportive. Again they have suffered slight fadding but at some stage I would like to recover them to suit the interior colour. I’m still considering white if I keep the external colour of the car red. Possibly burgundy if the exterior colour of the car is returned to silver (same colour she left the factory with).
I managed to fit the seats to the standard rails. It is basically a square bracket fastened to the seat with high tensile bolts. Afterall I don’t want to be interviewing my windscreen anytime soon. I’ve also recently managed to get some new carpets (no they aren’t original) but I mean honestly carpets are there to get dirty if the outside border or pattern isn’t 100% original well, I guess it’s not 100% original. I don’t have any photos of the new carpets in yet, but they did clean up the interior nicely.
The next items on the agenda are to get a new centre console. I’m a bit worried about buying one off ebay since they are so delicate I’m worried it will get broken during shipping. I’ve also been watching a few centre heater control panels. I wasn’t aware but the US model has things mirrored so buying one of those will annoy me. I was bidding on a fairlady Z one but got outbid at the last minute and wasn’t home to monitor it. Finally what I would really like to get is some diamond vinyl interior, my interior is currently non pleated vinyl. Take a look at some before and after shots of my old and new seats
